Social Studies

✨ Overview

The Social Studies Department at MLVR helps students develop a strong understanding of history, geography, civics, and culture. Through engaging, standards-based instruction, students build critical thinking skills and learn to become informed, responsible citizens in a diverse and connected world.

📘 Instructional Program

MLVR utilizes TeachTCI (Grades K–8) as its core social studies program. TeachTCI provides interactive, inquiry-based lessons that engage students in exploring historical events, civic concepts, geography, and cultural understanding through meaningful, real-world connections.

Students participate in collaborative activities, discussions, and project-based learning experiences that deepen comprehension and engagement.

🧠 What Students Learn

Students develop understanding across key social studies domains, including:

  • History (U.S. and world)
  • Civics and government
  • Geography and mapping skills
  • Economics (foundational concepts)
  • Culture and global awareness

🎯 Instructional Approach

Social Studies instruction is inquiry-based and discussion-driven. Teachers use primary and secondary sources, collaborative learning, and real-world applications to help students analyze historical events and understand their relevance today.

Instruction is designed to build critical thinking, perspective-taking, and civic responsibility.

🌟 Civic Engagement & Understanding

Students are encouraged to connect classroom learning to their roles as active, informed members of their community and the broader world.

As part of our participation in the NJ Revolutionary Schools initiative, students engage in learning experiences connected to New Jersey’s 250th anniversary, deepening their understanding of the state’s history, civic identity, and role in shaping our nation.
