Through standards-based instruction, students build essential literacy skills that support success across all subject areas and prepare them for future academic challenges.

📚 What Students Learn

Students engage in a comprehensive literacy program that focuses on reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills.

Key areas of focus include:

  • Reading comprehension and analysis
  • Writing for various purposes and audiences
  • Vocabulary development
  • Grammar and language conventions
  • Speaking and listening skills

🎯 Instructional Approach

ELA instruction at MLVR is grounded in data-driven practices, differentiated instruction, and small group learning. Teachers provide targeted support and enrichment to meet the needs of all learners while fostering a love of reading and writing.

In Grades K–2, students build foundational literacy skills through a balanced literacy approach that includes Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop and guided reading. In Grades 3–8, instruction transitions to a more text-based model, where students engage with complex, grade-level novels to deepen comprehension, analysis, and critical thinking skills.

📖 Literacy Focus

Students are encouraged to read both independently and collaboratively, exploring a variety of texts that promote critical thinking and discussion. Writing instruction emphasizes clarity, organization, and the ability to express ideas effectively.
